What is the FIRST Global Challenge?

The FIRST Global Challenge is an olympics-style, international robotics competition that takes place in a different country each year, this year it will be in Singapore from 7-10 October.

FIRST Global invites each nation to send a team to build and program a robot to compete. The STEM Embassy has been approached to assemble a national team from Aruba to participate in the challenge for the first time.

This year's theme is Hydrogen Horizons to highlight the importance of renewable energy. The format of the competition is a game that challenges participants to use their creativity and problem solving skills to design and build a skilled robot from a standard kit of parts. Teams must then navigate their robot in the simulated world to produce hydrogen and use it to store, transport, and convert energy.

No prior robotics experience is necessary, though this will be a great opportunity to:

  • Gain hands-on technical experience building a robot for a specific purpose;

  • Learn to work in your own team;

  • Collaborate with other teams from other countries and cultures.

More information about the competition, First Global, and previous editions can be found here.

Join the competition!

Thank you for your interest in representing Aruba in the 2023 FIRST Global Challenge. Please apply by filling in the application form. We will get back to you as soon as possible.

Participation Details

The competition is open for a team of 3 to 5 high school students between the ages of 14 to 18. The application must be submitted as detailed below.

A standard kit with all the materials will be sent to the team to prepare the robot in the months of August and September. Members from The STEM Embassy will be your team coaches, and additional online technical coaching is provided by FIRST Global.

The competition itself will take place in Singapore between 7-10 October 2023, and additional days will be needed to travel to and from Singapore. Up to 5 team members and 2 adult coaches can be present at the event per team. The 2 adult coaches from The STEM Embassy will travel with your team to Singapore.

At this moment this is an opportunity. Once a team is selected, fundraising will be necessary to be able to cover all the costs of the participation, which The STEM Embassy will take the lead in. Financial aid is available from FIRST Global, but this can only be requested once the team is selected.
